Bali Ocean Days 2026: From Shared Concern to Collective Action

December 2025 / Issue #006

Bali Ocean Days enters its third edition, it is clear that this platform has grown beyond a conventional conference.

By Sky Blue Sea Foundation

As Bali Ocean Days enters its third edition, it is clear that this platform has grown beyond a conventional conference. What began as a gathering of concerned ocean advocates has evolved into a regional, action-oriented convention - bringing together ministers, scientists, NGOs, entrepreneurs, impact finance, youth leaders, media, and coastal communities across Indonesia and fellow archipelagic and small-island states.

A recent SpeakUp Monday broadcast lead by Robert Bonnick, offered a glimpse into what Bali Ocean Days 2026 (30–31 January 2026) stands for: collaboration over duplication, practical implementation over rhetoric, and systems thinking over quick fixes. Convened by the Sky Blue Sea Foundation in collaboration with partners and stakeholders of the sea, the forum continues to build a “melting pot” ecosystem - where ideas, capital, policy, and grassroots action intersect.

Compassion, Credibility, and Change

For Aisha Reynolds, Head of Scientific and Technical Affairs at Sky Blue Sea Foundation, ocean protection starts with compassion - but lasting impact requires evidence, economic framing, and policy fluency. From her early formative experience in Bali to a decade of frontline conservation work with Sea Shepherd and later engagement in climate finance, her journey reflects the evolution many movements must take: from passion-driven action to evidence-based advocacy.

Her message resonated strongly - change does not require government permission, but it does demand an understanding of audiences, credible data, and solutions tailored to real-world constraints. Activism must be strategic, collaborative, and grounded in systems thinking.

From Dialogue to Enforceable Solutions

Pascal Philippe, Secretary General of Sky Blue Sea Foundation, emphasized the urgency of turning conversations into enforceable action. Unsustainable marine tourism - anchoring on reefs, overcrowding, unmanaged waste, and weak enforcement - remains one of the most immediate and solvable stressors on coral ecosystems.

Bali Ocean Days 2026 will spotlight practical protocols such as mooring buoy networks, visitor caps, mandatory operator briefings, wastewater controls, insurance requirements, and penalties - aligned with UN frameworks and initiatives like Green Fins. Central to this effort is the Coral Emergency Declaration, designed to unite boat operators, tourism stakeholders, NGOs, and government bodies around clear, implementable commitments.

Beyond coastal waters, upstream interventions - such as river-cleanup pontoons developed with the Indonesian Army - highlight scalable solutions to prevent pollution before it reaches the sea.

Why Bali Ocean Days Matters - Now

From accelerating coral bleaching to sea turtle nesting failures and extreme climate events, the ocean crisis is no longer abstract. Indonesia’s 17,000 islands - and island nations across the Pacific - stand on the climate frontline. Ocean health is inseparable from livelihoods, food security, culture, and economic resilience.

Bali Ocean Days 2026 responds by convening over 40 speakers across six thematic tracks, fostering business matching, funding dialogue, youth engagement, and cross-sector collaboration - while keeping equity for coastal communities at its core.

Bali Ocean Days is not about one organization or one solution. It is about collective responsibility and coordinated action.

We invite you to be part of this growing movement - where shared concern becomes shared commitment, and dialogue leads to measurable impact.
