"Plastic Trash, Oceans and The Planet"
The SkyBlueSea Foundation is a non-profit organization that aims to stop plastic waste getting into waterways and seas. This is via a well-planned program that is focused on waste management and simultaneously changing the public’s mindset to be wiser when using plastics.
Much attention to this issue has been given by the government, companies, and organizations in the handling the problem of plastic waste. However, much waste still ends up in garbage dumps. This in itself is a major issue to which there is no solution as of yet, even though it leads to micro plastics seeping into groundwater, and the plants and animals that make up the food chain.
Furthermore, plastic waste that enters waterways produces a range of new problems. Research (BBC Earth) has shown that plastic kills coral because its surface is a perfect environment for bacteria called vibrio to breed. This bacterium, which is the equivalent to cholera in humans, infects coral like gangrene on human tissue.
There is also a correlation between plastic waste, the ocean, the air, and global warming. The ocean is the largest carbon dioxide (CO2) sink in the world, while coral is an oxygen (O2) producer and a source of life of the oceans.
When plastic waste covers portions of the ocean, it leads to a number of issues. It reduces the amount of CO2 absorbed by the ocean, thus contributing to air pollution and global warming by exacerbating the greenhouse effect.
A rise of 1–2 degrees in ocean water will propagate the floriation of algae on coral, which, in turn, prevents the coral from absorbing CO2 and producing O2. This kills the coral and is called bleaching or calcium remains; it is already happening to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
In addition, oceans stabilize temperature around the globe through streams like the Gulf Stream. Its health and capacity to absorb heat out of the atmosphere must be preserved to avoid global warming.
What Do We Need To Do?
Upstream :
Innovation of biodegradable plastics and placing responsibility on plastic producers and plastic packaging user to solve plastic waste it createsMiddlestream :
Socialization, laws and regulations and alternative solutions to single-use plastic and plastic waste recyclingDownstream :
Incineration that is economicalVISION
Empowering global action for the development of an Indonesian Blue Economy ensuring the long-term sustainability of marine ecosystems and the well-being of coastal communities.
MISSION
To raise awareness about marine conservation and ocean protection through public events and community engagement toward a series of key objectives for the future of our blue planet:
- Reduce marine pollution, notably plastic debris, chemical waste and ocean acidification.
- Protect coral reefs and mangrove ecosystems as important blue carbon environments.
- Reverse the overfishing crisis to save endangered species and ensure the long-term availability of resources.
- Empower and educate coastal communities to marine conservation principles.
Rationale:
- Global Relevance: Aligns with current global marine priorities, emphasizing ocean biodiversity and governance in international waters.
- Alignment with Sky Blue Sea Foundation's Vision: Closely connects to the foundation's mission to drive sustainable ocean solutions, advocate international cooperation, and foster marine stewardship.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Relevant for policymakers, scientists, business leaders, international agencies, Indigenous communities, and civil society, facilitating broad-based participation and collaboration.
